Title: Transparent Space #02
Media: Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 48"x36"
Finish Date: November, 2006
Commentary:

The first piece in my move away from chromatic work was a monochromatic piece begun in the spring, using burnt umber and white gessos. It survives only as the first or second painting under this image. However, in this image I return to the chromatic simplicity of its progenitor.

This work employs ideas from the Etude series of the same period. It also continues the extended edge motif suggested in Transparent Space #01. Edges transform into lines and dominate the sense of space contained within the three edge-connected shapes. The circular elements at once suggest shapes but their edges once again dominate.

I resisted the urge to begin adding colour to the planes, preferring to retain the elemental structure as the basic statement.
